Merlin: Power Infrastructure

The backup generators at the Merlin data center in Swindon, England.

The Capgemini data center is supported by two diversely routed 7 MVA power feeds. Containerized flywheel UPS systems are used to provide ride-through power, while generators are deployed in an N+1 arrangement, with three generators currently on-site. The Swindon site has a fiber connection to another Capgemini site in Bristol to allow for synchronous backup.

In addition to LEED certification, Capgemini says it will seek a full certification from The Uptime Institute as a Tier III data center. While many facilities claim a certain tier status, a much smaller number actually seek Tier certification.

If the facility's green credentials needed any additional support, the first tenant at Merlin is said to be the UK Environment Agency, which is a Capgemini client and reportedly will occupy two modules in the Swindon facility.
