How to Type the Epsilon Symbol (ε)

Follow these simple methods for inserting the epsilon symbol (ε) on a Windows PC, on a Mac, or on iOS and Android devices.

Epsilon is an ancient Greek letter and a math symbol that refers to a tiny number in an equation. It only takes an infinitesimally small amount of effort to type the epsilon sign or symbol (ε) into a Microsoft Word document on a Windows PC, on a Mac, or on an iOS or Android device.

We explain each simple technique for typing this symbol below.  

How to Insert the Epsilon Symbol on a Windows PC

On a Windows PC, click to the place in your document where you would like to insert the epsilon symbol. Next, hold the Alt key and type the numbers 238.  

If you’re using Microsoft Word and plan on using the epsilon symbol multiple times, you can adjust your AutoCorrect options to automatically replace a word or phrase (such as “epsilon”) with the symbol. First, copy the symbol from this article: ε. Next, search under the Tools tab for AutoCorrect options. In the replace field, choose a word or phrase (such as “epsilon”) and then paste the symbol into the with field. Lastly, press add. 

How to Insert the Epsilon Symbol on a Mac

If you’re using a Mac, the easiest way to insert the epsilon symbol into a document is to open your Emoji and Symbols library. First, tap the globe key, or simultaneously press Control, Command, and Spacebar. In the Character Viewer that appears, search for “epsilon.” Then double-click the epsilon symbol or highlight and drag the symbol into your document.

How to Insert the Epsilon Symbol on an iPhone or iPad

To quickly type the epsilon symbol on your iPhone, first change your keyboard settings to include Greek. Under Settings, tap General, then Keyboards. From here, you can “Add New Keyboard.” Now you can open the application where you would like to type the epsilon sign, which is the Greek lowercase e. 

How to Insert the Epsilon Symbol on an Android Phone

If you’ve installed Gboard, the Google keyboard, on your Android phone, you can find the epsilon symbol by adding Greek to your keyboard. First tap on Settings, then Languages, followed by Add keyboard. Then find the Greek lowercase e to insert the epsilon symbol into your document or message.
