How to Type the Does Not Equal Symbol (≠)

If you’re using a Windows PC, a Mac, or an iOS or Android device, here's how to insert the does not equal sign or symbol.

Each method for typing the does not equal sign or symbol (≠) is as good as any other. Read below to learn how to type this math symbol on a Windows PC, a Mac, or a mobile device. 

How to Insert the Does Not Equal Sign on a Windows PC

If you’re using a Windows PC, click to the place in your document where you would like to insert the not equal symbol. Next, hold the Alt key and type the numbers 8800.  

On Microsoft Word, you can also use the following shortcut: type the numbers 2260. Next, press and hold the Alt key, followed by the letter X. 

If you plan on using the does not equal sign multiple times in a Microsoft Word document, you can set an AutoCorrect rule to automatically replace a word or phrase (such as “not equal”) with the symbol. First, copy the does not equal symbol from this article: ≠. Next, search under the Tools tab for AutoCorrect options. In the replace field, choose a word or phrase (such as “not equal”) and then in the with field, paste the symbol. Now press add. 

How to Insert the Does Not Equal Symbol on a Mac

The simplest way to insert the does not equal symbol on a Mac is by using a keyboard shortcut. Simply place the cursor in the part of your document where you would like to add the sign. Then press the Option key followed by the equals (=) key.

Another easy way to type the does not equal sign on your Mac is to open your Emoji and Symbols library. Press Control, Command, and Spacebar simultaneously to open the Character Viewer. Search for “not equal.” Then double-click the does not equal symbol or highlight and drag the symbol into your document. 

How to Insert the Does Not Equal Sign on an iPhone or iPad

It’s just as straightforward to type the does not equal sign from the keyboard of an iOS or Android device.

On an iPhone, open your numbers and symbols keyboard by tapping the #+= key. Then press and hold down the equal key (=) until alternate characters appear. Now tap the does not equal symbol to include the sign in your document or message.

How to Insert the Does Not Equal Sign on an Android Phone

On your Android device, access the symbols keyboard by pressing the =< icon. Next, find the equal sign (=). Press and hold the key until the does not equal symbol appears.
