Here’s a roundup of some of this week’s headlines from the network and content delivery network  sectors:

EdgeCast enhances global CDN. EdgeCast Networks  announced network advancements designed to meet global demand for its services. Point of Presence (PoP) locations have been added in Vienna, Austria, Stockholm, Sweden, and São Paulo, Brazil. Other network advancements include EdgeCast rolling out a new easy-to-use interface for its Edge Optimizer front-end optimization (FEO) service—a set of on-the-fly tools that optimize the performance of web sites without changes to the site code. Its streaming network is enhanced by migrating its platform to Adobe Flash Media Server 4.5 and adding new FMS ingest capabilities in Frankfurt, Germany, and Hong Kong. “Web content continues its exponential growth, and the number of connected devices is increasing by the minute," said Anthony Citrano, EdgeCast vice president of communications and marketing. "These factors—the explosion of both supply and demand— are fueling incredible growth in site acceleration and delivery services. Performance matters more than ever, and that means a rapidly-growing need for intelligently delivering data from the Internet’s edge.”

Infinera selected by Cyprus Telecommunications. Infinera (INFN) and Cyprus Communications announced the deployment of Infinera's DTN-X platform, featuring 500 Gigabit per second long-haul super-channels, across the TE-North Cable System, interconnecting Asia and Africa to Europe.  Using the DTN-X platform will allow Cyprus to add additional capacity to its ALEXANDROS subsystem, with the ability to upgrade TE North’s terrestrial network in the future, in order to serve global operators who rely on its services in the Middle East, Asia and Africa region. “We are delighted to work with Infinera to deploy the DTN-X platform on this critical international telecommunications route,” said Yiannis Koulias, Cyta’s Director of National & International Wholesale Market. “We are confident the Infinera DTN-X delivers the most advanced optical transport platform based on 500 Gb/s photonic integrated circuits. The FlexCoherent technology will allow us to optimize transmission performance across our existing subsea fiber plant and meet the demands of our customers quickly and efficiently.”

Ciena selected by FiberLight.  Ciena (CIEN) announced that FiberLight has deployed Ciena’s packet networking solutions to build reliable and robust mobile backhaul networks for two major U.S. wireless operators. The new mobile backhaul networks will bring fiber to more than 450 cell towers and provide customers with 100Mb/s connectivity at each tower, with the option to scale seamlessly to 1Gb/s. FiberLight is leveraging Ciena’s 5410 and 5150 Service Aggregation Switches, as well as Ciena’s 3930, 3931 and 3960 Service Delivery Switches. “By deploying Ciena’s packet networking infrastructure at the vast majority of towers we serve, we are enabling our customers to quickly scale from 100Mb/s to 1Gb/s per tower, eliminate bandwidth restrictions and reduce the potential for data bottlenecks," said Andrew Stravelli, Vice President Network Engineering, FiberLight "Additionally, the automation, remote provisioning and reporting features provided by Ciena’s management solution allows us to proactively monitor, maintain and troubleshoot our customers’ networks.  Our end customers can then use the secure, cloud-based portal to confirm that we are meeting SLA requirements.”
