Location, location, location: the fundamental considerations that drive real estate investment are no less essential to data center campus construction. Consider the example of European data center operator DATA4 Group, which continues to grow its network across the continent with the continued development of its French and Italian campuses in Paris and Milan in addition to a new campus in Spain opening in 2020 — cornerstones of an expansion investment initiative totaling more than €200 million.

DATA4, which also boasts data centers in Paris and Luxembourg, carefully selects strategic locations to offer customers diversified, secure connectivity options encompassing traditional telecommunications routes (both land and sea) as well as public cloud platforms. For example, the Italian campus — situated a short distance from Via Caldera, the historic headquarters of the country’s telecom interconnection points — also hosts the Milan Internet Exchange, Italy’s primary Internet exchange node. The forthcoming Spain campus, meanwhile, is under construction in Alcobendas, a site selected for its large number of telecom access points and proximity to Madrid, the nation’s capital.

The data centers are “just the beginning of a broader expansion project in Europe," said DATA4 President Olivier Micheli, noting that the company plans to build 19 additional data centers within the next five years to reach a total network of 38 data centers. “The deployment to southern Europe makes it possible to offer connectivity gateways to Africa, America, and Asia," Micheli added.

Founded in 2006, DATA4 hosts IT equipment for a range of organizations, cloud providers and ESNs, promising maximum security conditions. Its D4 Digital Hub offer, launched in 2017, enables direct, secure access to more than 220 cloud destinations, telecom operators and European Internet exchange nodes alongside partner services such as HPC (High Performance Computing) and storage on demand.
