Study: Server Failures Don't Rise Along With the Heat - Servers don’t sweat the heat as much as you might think. That’s the takeaway from a new study from researchers at the University of Toronto, who studied data on equipment failures at data centers operated by Google, Los Alamos National Labs, and Canada’s SciNet HPC consortium. The study provides some of the most comprehensive real-world data to date on the impact and implications of raising the temperature in data centers.

HP Developing Net-Zero Data Center Concept - Can existing strategies be combined to create a “net zero” data center that requires no net energy from utility power grids? HP Labs said this week that it is developing such a concept, which is being tested at a 3,000 square foot facility at the company’s campus in Palo Alto, Calif.

Q&A: Andrew Blum on the 'Tubes' Powering the Internet - What does the center of the Internet look like? Journalist Andrew Blum has spent the past three years exploring that question. The result is Blum’s new book: Tubes: A Journey to the Center of the Internet, which is being released this week.

ABB & Green Unveil DC-Powered Data Center - Advocates of DC power in data centers now have a new facility to make their case. Swiss IT provider Green and power conglomerate ABB today unveiled a new data center in Zurich that they are touting as “the most powerful application of DC in a data center to date.”

Dell Unveils ARM-based Server Ecosystem - On Tuesday Dell unveiled ARM-based server ecosystem programs to support the development and testing of ARM-based applications and solutions. Dell is the latest server marker to seek to leverage low-power processors initially used in smart phones.
