Veterans of the data center industry can remember a time when industry conferences were few and far between. As the dot-com and telecom sectors crashed, the trade shows became less crowded, and populated primarily by vendors rather than customers. In 2001 some of the hot events for data center specialists included Infotonic's Web Hosting Expo, the Colocation Summit from the Phillips Group and the IMN Carrier Hotel conference. All were gone by 2002.

Flash forward to 2007. Next week, data center professionals will have a choice between multiple industry events occurring in the same week. Here's the rundown:

  • Data Center World Fall, Sept. 16-19: The twice-a-year event from data center industry group AFCOM will be in Dallas at the Gaylord Texan resort, and features a keynote by the EPA's Andrew Fanara.

  • The Hosting Transformation Summit, Sept. 17-19: The Tier 1 Research event is at The Venetian in Las Vegas, and features presentations by Tier 1's Dan Golding and Christopher Dolan, President of 365 Main.

  • High Performance on Wall Street: This one-day conference on Monday, Sept. 17 features discussion of high-performance trading applications, and the power consumption and cooling issues they raise. Intel, Sun Microsystems, Reuters and Cisco Systems are expected to announce the results of tests on a high performance solution to accelerate financial services applications.

I'll be in Dallas for Data Center World. But it's weird to have a choice of events in any given week. We'll continue to keep you posted on upcoming conferences, as Data Center Knowledge will be a media partner on many of these events.
