The U.S. government has launched Apps.gov, an online storefront for cloud services and applications for federal agencies. There's a flurry of speculation about the services listed from Google, Microsoft Amazon, Salesforce, etc. (more on this momentarily). But here's the headline that seems to have been lost in the "usual suspects" cloud frenzy: Apps.gov is being housed at Savvis, a managed hosting provider with a lengthy history hosting secure apps for the financial industry. This follows the choice of Terremark, another long-time player in the managed hosting arena, to host the USA.gov and Data.gov cloud projects.

This hearkens back to a question I raised back in June: Which is the more compelling story for enterprises and government agencies contemplating cloud computing: “We’ve spent years building our cloud service, and can now secure your data?” Or “We’ve spent years securing your data, and are now offering cloud services?”

With Savvis and Terremark hosting the early federal cloud projects, the security story is winning the day thus far. There's lots of commentary from around the web. A roundup to come.
