Netflix Picks Teradata Cloud for Analytics

Teradata (TDC) held its annual Partners Conference this week in Dallas, where it announced Netflix usage of the Teradata Cloud, a new data backup and recovery Data Stream architecture, and several other customer wins for the Teradata platform.

Netflix selects Teradata

Netflix has selected the Teradata Cloud specifically for massively-parallel analytics, to support its enterprise data needs for complex query-based analysis. Netflix selected Teradata for its leadership in analytics, the best-in-class database and data warehousing, the subscription-based pricing and its flexible options to provision more resources and scale up as needed. Teradata Cloud provides Netflix with remote access to Teradata Database software and supporting backup capacity. Netflix is able to utilize the sophisticated Teradata software in a flexible cloud delivery model. The end result is that Netflix can quickly and easily leverage detailed data to help drive their business forward.

“We are excited to have Teradata bring its best-in-class data warehousing expertise to the cloud,” said Kurt Brown, Director of Data Platforms, Netflix. “We will use Teradata Cloud as our database platform for high concurrency and mixed workloads, which require sophisticated integration and processing at extremely high speeds. With hundreds of analysts examining billions of data points we felt that Teradata best met our needs for workload management, scalability and concurrent users.”

Data Stream Architecture

Teradata announced a major advance in backup and recovery (BAR) capabilities for its customers. Teradata Data Stream Architecture (DSA) is a new and enhanced alternative, and an eventual replacement to the legacy ARC-based BAR architecture that will triple backup performance and reap significant improvements in scalability, usability, and security. It will optimize data streaming in and out of the Teradata database, achieving lightning-fast backup and restore windows.  Temperature and compression-aware features for hot and cold data allow data to be restored to the same temperature and compression states. Usability is improved via new Viewpoint BAR portlets that will be familiar to Teradata users. Security is also enhanced, as DSA users have to authenticate through traditional Teradata channels, rather than a stand-alone user interface.

“The vast majority of our customers already have their BAR solution supplied by Teradata, and nearly every Teradata customer uses some component of Teradata BAR,” said Scott Gnau, president, Teradata Labs. “Teradata DSA can help these customers create tremendous new value and sidestep BAR pitfalls like data capacity limits and backup windows that extend into production time.”

Customer Wins

Teradata announced  that Mobiltel, a leading telecom operator in Bulgaria, has recently completed its software migration from its existing Campaign Management solution to Teradata Campaign Management. The new Integrated Marketing Management (IMM) solution will enable Mobiltel to automate its marketing processes and conduct tailored marketing campaigns to enhance the customer experience among specific customer groups. The new Teradata solution will enable Mobiltel to prepare individually addressed offers for more effective acquisition of new customers, and will increase customers’ current and life-time value by expanding their use of Mobiltel products and services.

Teradata also announced that Brazil’s Federal District Water Utility, has deployed a Teradata Appliance for complex data management and tactical business analysis – helping drive a six percent increase in annual revenue. Caesb implemented the Teradata system to bring more detailed business visibility and deeper data-driven intelligence and insight to its measurement system, increasing the number of effective connections while also reducing incidents of fraud. The Teradata data analysis appliance was implemented by Maxtera, regional reseller.

Terdata announced that French utility ERDF has selected technology solutions from Teradata as part of a strategic business initiative involving the redesign of their information system used to manage, process and analyze large sets of data generated by their smart grid. ERDF manages 95 percent of the power systems in France, and after considering multiple proposals decided upon the Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance with the new Teradata Database, backed with Professional Services for systems maintenance and integration. The enormous volume of data colelcted will include traditional power consumption data as well as multiple new types, analytic profiles and categories analyzed from smart meter data usage.
