A year ago, we were happily going about our lives, at work and outside of it. After Data Center World 2019 (last March in Phoenix) our team started planning for Data Center World 2020, thinking of what most innovative things in our space we’d discuss with our community, and what new fun activities we’d plan for the 2020 show. Little did we know…
Personally, I was really looking forward to once again visiting San Antonio, where DCW 2020 was going to be held, and reconnecting with the community in person. I was also excited to go to all the sessions the event’s team had planned. Well, I won’t get to do the first two of those things – at least not this year.
But the third thing is why I’m writing to you today. Data Center World 2020 is happening, but in a virtual format of course. And the amount of content on the cutting edge of enterprise IT and data center tech and strategy is overwhelming. I don’t know of any conference – and I’ve been to many conferences – that combines sessions on the latest in everything from cloud infrastructure to data center design, management, and strategy in such a rich way.

Here are some of the agenda highlights, which barely scratch the surface of the vast amount of content being prepared for the four-day event (full agenda here):
- Duncan Wardle, formerly head of innovation at Disney, will talk about infusing creative thinking and innovation into everything we do at work.
- Latane Garetson, head of data center physical infrastructure at Dropbox, will talk about his team’s dramatic recent change in data center strategy and share the project’s results and lessons learned.
- Bill Kleyman, EVP of digital solutions at Switch, will present the results of the annual State of the Data Center survey – an essential piece of industrywide pulse-taking done every year by AFCOM.
- Roxy Gong and Gavin Lu, data center operations manager and R&D director, respectively, at VMware, will share details about the software system (now open source) their team built to make IT and facilities systems aware of each other.
- Jennifer Reininger, senior consultant at ESD, will share war stories and lessons learned from the front lines of the ongoing fight for the best data center sites among hyperscale cloud platforms.
- Suresh Krishnan, CTO at Kaloom, will explain why 5G is making already complex edge computing infrastructure even more complicated and how some data center operators are solving this puzzle.
This handful of highlights doesn’t really do the agenda justice. There will also be sessions on immersion cooling, software-defined power, automation and predictive maintenance, new applications for IoT in critical infrastructure, and much, much more.
