  • LucasFilm: A Fast Network Key to Visual Effects

    June 24th, 2009 : Rich Miller

LucasFilm has produced some of the most memorable visual effects in the history of films. Rendering the special effects for Star Wars (Episodes 1, 2 and 3) and the Terminator and Indiana Jones series requires serious high-performance computing infrastructure in the company’s data center in San Francisco and animation studio in Singapore. In this customer profile from Brocade Communications, LucasFilm senior network manager Peter Hricak talks about the importance of network performance in visual effects and the company’s use of Brocade equipment. This video runs about 4 minutes.

  • Sun’s Cloud Chilling at Vegas SuperNAP

    June 17th, 2009 : Rich Miller

What lies ahead for the Sun Open Cloud Platform unveiled in March? That will likely be a decision for Oracle Systems (ORCL), which has agreed to acquire Sun Microsystems (JAVA) for $7.4 billion, with the deal is expected to close this summer. Until then, the Sun Cloud is chilling in the SuperNAP in Las Vegas, where its servers are housed in one of Switch Communciations’ custom high-density computing pods known as a T-SCIF (short for Thermal Separate Compartment in Facility). We had a look at the Sun installation during a recent tour of the SuperNAP. The racks are packed top to bottom with servers, creating a power load of up to 24 kW per rack. This video from Sun provides an inside look at the company’s operation at the SuperNAP and the cooling systems that manage that density for the Sun cloud platform. This video runs about 5 minutes.

  • Inside an Equinix Data Center

    June 9th, 2009 : Rich Miller

Equinix has built a reputation for engineering its data centers for reliability. The company says its U.S. data centers reached “six nines” of reliability (99.9999 percent uptime) for 2008. That track record has attracted more than 2,200 customers hosting mission-critical equipment in the company’s data centers. The Equinix uptime strategy is built atop a redundant power and cooling infrastructure. During a recent visit to Equinix in Ashburn, Virginia, we had a chance to look inside one of the company’s newer data centers. We couldn’t film the cages or racks, but were able to have a look at much of the mechanical and electrical infrastructure supporting the site. This video runs about 2 minutes, 20 seconds.

  • Using Economizers to Save Energy

    June 5th, 2009 : Rich Miller

Fresh air cooling using air-side economizers - also known as “free cooling” - is being more widely adopted as data centers seek improved energy efficiency and lower Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) ratings. Advanced Data Centers recently hosted a meeting of the Critical Facilities Roundtable in which Peter Rumsey, the President of Rumsey Engineers, gave a presentation on the use of economizers at ADC’s LEED Platinum facility in Sacramento, Calif. ADC says its economizers are a key piece of the facility’s PUE rating of 1.12. Rumsey’s presentation spans four 10-minute videos. The first is embedded below, while Part Two, Part Three and Part Four can all be viewed on YouTube.
