Riverbed acquisition and new cloud products. Riverbed (RVBD) announced that it has acquired Global Protocols LLC, a leader in helping government organizations achieve greater application performance across satellite networks using the Space Communications Protocol Standards (SCPS). On Wednesday Riverbed introduced the first wide area network (WAN) optimization solution purpose-built for public cloud environments. Geared towards enterprise and government customers the new Cloud Steelhead is a solution engineered for the public cloud and will scale within cloud service provider environments. Cloud Steelhead will interoperate with Steelhead appliances, Virtual Steelhead appliances, and the Steelhead mobile client. The Riverbed Cloud Steelhead is expected to be generally available in the fourth quarter of 2010. The Riverbed Whitewater appliance was also introduced Wednesday, as a cloud storage accelerator targeting backup and select archive workloads. "Whitewater gives us flexibility in how and where we can recover data – we get local-like restore of any backup, and the ability to restore data instantly to any other site in the case of a disaster," said Jeff Rountree, global network manager at Pump Solutions Group. "With Whitewater, cloud storage becomes more efficient and accessible. Most importantly, we now have near-unlimited storage space – no longer do we need to deal with multiple volumes of disk or tapes for our data protection needs."
New Force 10 open automation products. Force 10 Networks announced new functionality for its innovative network automation solutions designed to provide additional flexibility, availability and manageability. The new SmartScripts software will enhance management by providing a scripting environment for Force 10 switching platforms. Also introduced was that their HyperLink software will now support automated VM/VLAN migration in VMware and Citrix environments to help ensure improved network connectivity and security. “Automating configuration management represents an important step toward transforming data center infrastructure into an automated, policy-driven network fabric,” said Arpit Joshipura, chief marketing officer, Force10 Networks. “Working with our impressive ecosystem of partners, we have extended our position as a leading data center infrastructure provider by giving CIOs and their IT staffs some important tools needed to improve their responsiveness, efficiency and reliability while bringing costs under control.”
