IBM describes its new data center project at Syracuse University as its "greenest" facility yet. The 12,000 square foot facility opened its doors this week, offering a look at the data center's comprehensive approach to energy efficiency, which incorporates a microturbine engine fueled by natural gas, absorption chillers, the reuse of waste heat in nearby buildings, DC power distribution, and rear-door liquid cooling for each cabinet.

None of the specific technologies being used in the Syracuse facility are new, but the project will allow IBM and Syracuse to develop data on the most effective way to use them in tandem in a data center for the best collective power savings.
