To the Deathstar: Tour of LucasFilm's Data Center

Video tour of Lucasfilm's data center, showing storage and compute power used to render visual effects for Hollywood movies, including wholly computer-generated films as well as photo-realistic and digital effects combined.

All Things Digital blogger Arik Hesseldahl recently toured the data center for Lucasfilm, Ltd. and Industrial Light and Magic (a division of Lucasfilm) and published this short video tour. The tour, given by Greg Grusby, Technical Publicist at ILM, shows NetApp appliances used for "petabytes of storage," the retired "Deathstar" servers which did the rendering of the Star Wars prequel movies, and the new IBM Blade servers that are currently rendering visual effects for this summer's blockbuster films. ILM has this facility located San Francisco and an animation studio in Singapore. Previously, we reported on the capabilities of Lucasfilm's network.
