AOL Data Centers Are NOT For Sale

Contrary to earlier reports, AOL is not selling two of its data centers in northern Virginia.

We often link to data center news appearing in other publications. On August 15 we linked to reports at Valleywag and Silicon Alley Insider saying AOL might sell its Manassas Tech Center and Dulles Tech Center, downsize its staff and outsource some operations duties to Emcor Group.

As it turns out, the reports were dead wrong. "There is absolutely no truth to the stories," said Anne Bentley, Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications for AOL. "There is no plan to do anything more with Emcor and there are no current plans to sell the data centers."

AOL does have a relationship with Emcor, but plans no changes at this time. "They handle all of our physical plan maintenance (heating, cooling, backup generators, etc.)," Bentley said. "We used to handle that in house but, transitioned to Emcor last year when we decided it was probably smarter to go with a vendor to service the physical plants. Most companies outsource this function."

At Data Center Knowledge we're committed to getting the story right and the facts straight. If you see a report on our site that may be inaccurate, please e-mail us and let us know.
