Resources: Scaling Web Apps, Virtualization

New presentations: Rackspace looks at how to scale web apps, and Media Temple discusses its 10,000 virtual environments.

In the past week I've come across several presentations and case studies that may be of interest to data center operators looking at scalability and virtualization, respectively:

  • Rackspace CTO John Engates has shared his presentation titled "The 7 Stages of Scaling Web Apps (PDF)" from last year's MySQL conference. "The idea of my presentation was to take some of the customer experiences we've observed here at Rackspace and create an example of how hardware and software typically scales to keep up with the growth," John writes. "This is not a super technical presentation, but should give anyone who is just starting out with a new app a little preview of what's to come if their business really takes off."
  • Media Temple has just surpassed 10,000 virtual environments using Virtuozzo Containers from Parallels (SWsoft). The Los Angeles hosting company has been using virtualization since 2001. "We instantly saw this as a technology that could take our vision of a fast-paced, dynamically scalable and reliable network architecture to a whole new level of performance," said Demian Sellfors, CEO of (mt) Media Temple. "We knew virtualization was going to be the future and banked on it as the best way to meet our stated customer commitments and speed our rate of growth." Parallels has featured Media Temple's use of Virtuozzo in a case study (PDF) and press announcement.
