Cisco's Mobile Emergency Data Center

One of the interesting potential applications for mobile data centers is disaster response: the ability to quickly deploy computing and communications infrastructure to assist local officials and relief workers in major disasters. This is one of the uses that has been advanced for container data centers. It turns out that Cisco (CSCO) developed several mobile data centers in the wake of hurricane Katrina, one of which saw action during the Southern California wildfires last fall.

In this video, Cisco's Bob Browning provides a tour of Cisco's Network Emergency Response Vehicle (NERV) and talks about how the NERV was used in the Harris Fire.

For more information, see our past coverage of Cisco. For additional video, check out our DCK video archive, the Data Center Videos channel on YouTube.

Airlifting Equipment Into One Wilshire

How do you get large equipment to the opper floors of a major downtown building? Check out this video of an equipment airlift at the One Wilshire building in downtown Los Angeles. In April 2007 CRG West used a helicopter to airlift 53 pieces of electrical and air conditioning equipment to a 27th floor of One Wilshire. This sequence of still photos shows a 30-ton AC unit being hoisted onto a small platform.

CRG West has additional video of a separate chopper lift to the 28th floor in March 2007. See our archives for more images of One Wilshire and our recap of the sale of the building last year.

In this demo from the recent Data Center World Expo, Degree Controls Engineering Manager Coy Stine provides an overview of Room-Scale Intelligent Cooling, the new implementation of DegreeC's AdaptivCool product for thermal mapping and management of data centers. The booth was pretty busy when we shot this, but Coy's explanation should provide a sense of the product and related software. This video runs about 6 minutes.

We've previously written about DegreeC's HotSpotr tool. Check out our archives for additional stories on data center cooling.

Video: Opengate Rack Heat Containment System

In today's video, Mark Germagian of Opengate Data Sytems demonstrates his company's new heat containment system for data center racks. The containment system vents hot air from the top of the rack and provides a direct path back to the cooling units. Opengate's modules monitor air pressure in the rack and containment system, and comes with management software. This video runs 5 minutes, 45 seconds.

Video: Rackable ICE Cube Container

This video features a brief tour of ICE Cube, the high-density data center inside a shipping container from Rackable Systems (RACK). Conor Malone, Director of Data Center Solutions for Rackable, provides a look inside the container and talks about the ICE Cube's features and how early customers are using the units. There's a lot of airflow from the cooling inside the unit, which creates some residual noise on the audio. Conor is clearly used to talking over the breeze, which helps. This video runs just over 3 minutes.

For more information, check out our coverage of the ICE Cube container, as well as our archive of stories about Rackable.
