Telehouse has expanded into the key European financial hub of Frankfurt with the acquisition of Databurg GmbH , the company said today.

Telehouse has expanded into the key European financial hub of Frankfurt with the acquisition of Databurg GmbH , the company said today. Telehouse, a subsidiary of Japanese telecommunications giant KDDI Corporation, now has 43 data centres in 23 cities around the globe, with a total footprint of 67,000 square meters (721,000 square feet) of floor space.

The Frankfurt facility is a Tier 3 data centre with access to the DE-CIX, Europe’s second largest Internet exchange with over 400 ISP’s and carriers. Telehouse Frankfurt will also be directly interconnected to the London, Paris and New York data centres via the Telehouse Global Interlink, an ultra-fast Ethernet IP connection and to the rest of the family of data centres via the KDDI Global network.

“By opening this facility, we enable our customers to expand into a key European market which is expected to see further growth over the coming years solidifying Frankfurt as a major data centre hub for multinational corporations as well as the growing domestic market,” said Tokuji Mitsui, managing director of Telehouse and KDDI Europe. “Our global reputation as one of the most trusted brands of premium data centres will be expanded to Germany by further investment in the current infrastructure of the Databurg facility, ensuring it reflects the Telehouse global set of standards in technological provision, green credentials and customer service.”

“Telehouse currently support the European operations of some of Germany’s largest corporations who partner with us for our low latency network and for the quality of our facility management who are now looking for further expansions or new sites in their domestic market,” said Telehouse European sales and marketing director Michelle Reid. “In addition, we have seen encouraging demand from our non-German customers looking to expand specifically into Frankfurt with regards to traditional colocation and IT-on-demand services.”

The acquisition is the latest expansion from Telehouse, which has also added or expanded data centers in New York, Hong Kong, South Africa and Istanbul.

Telehouse said its 21 data centers in Japan continue to operate and have experienced no unplanned downtime in the aftermath of Friday’s massive earthquake and tsunami. That includes the Telehouse facility in Sendai, near the area hardest hit by the disasters.

Telehouse is owned and operated by the Japanese telecommunications company KDDI, and includes a global network of 41 data centers in 22 markets across Europe, the U.S. and Asia. Telehouse operates 10 data centers in Tokyo, as well as facilities in in Naha, Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Osaka, Nagoya, Oyama, Sapporo and Sendai.

“Our thoughts are with our colleagues, clients, friends and partners during this difficult time,” the company said on its web site. “Due to the effects of the earthquake, there are technical difficulties with connectivity to Japan.”

Telehouse said its data centers are coping with post-earthquake power rationing. “Tohoku-Electric Power and Tokyo Electric Power are implementing scheduled planned power outages,” the company said in a press release. “We want to reassure our community that all Telehouse facilities affected by this 3-hour commercial energy conservation mandate will implement routine self-generating power procedures. All facilities have a minimum 24-hour fuel supply plus regularly scheduled refueling (natural gas and/or diesel) and are expected to continue normal operations.”

The company is looking for expansion opportunities in additional markets.

Colocation provider Telehouse America is looking to grow. After opening the first phase of a new 60,000 square foot data center in Manhattan, Telehouse says it is scouting sites on both coasts for additional expansion.

“We need to add inventory and will continue to look for new facilities,” said Fred Cannone, Director of Sales and Marketing for Telehouse America. We’re looking at additional East Coast locations as well as additional West Coast locations.”

The company operates facilities at The Teleport in Staten Island and 25 Broadway in Manhattan, as well as a data center in Los Angeles. Cannone said Telehouse’s search was extending beyond those cities to new markets on each coast.

New Data Center in Manhattan
This week Telehouse officially opened its new data center at 85 10th Avenue in Manhattan. The company said the purchase of the Chelsea facility was “in direct response to the growing demand for diverse carrier neutral, colocation space in Manhattan.” The facility can accommodate up to 600 cabinets.

“It came along at just the right time,” Cannone said of the space in Chelsea, which previously housed a data center for Lehman Brothers. “We really needed the additional space.” Telehouse’s primary Manhattan location at 25 Broadway is about 80 percent filled, with only about 8,000 square feet of available space remaining.

Cannone noted that there is supply available in the greater New York market, but counts Telehouse America among the providers that have been able to differentiate themselves through the quality of their facilities. “There’s plenty of data center space on the market,” he said. “But as you move up to Tier III and beyond (on the four-level Uptime Institute tier system), it starts to thin out a lot.”

Focus on SME Market
The site at 85 10th Avenue is focusing on small to medium-sized businesses requiring colocation and interconnection services, though Telehouse may see more enterprise tenants over time. “The problem with a new facility is that you have to wait a year for SAS70,” Cannone said, referring to the Statement of Auditing Standards certification of data center management created by The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (see SAS70 Compliance for Data Center Providers for background). “Many enterprises will have some requirement for SAS70.”

Telehouse America is a pioneer in the colocation business, having launched in 1987 as a joint venture between Japanese telco KDDI and partners in the banking and securities industry. The company America expanded into lower Manhattan with its 25 Broadway facility in the Cunard Building, directly across the street from the Wall Street Bull statue. 25 Broadway is also home to the New York International Internet Exchange (NYIIX), Telehouse estimates that the NYIIX is the busiest public Internet exchange point in the city.

After many years of focusing primarily on colocation, Telehouse America introduced managed services offerings in 2009. Telehouse recently become the latest colocation provider to introduce a modular data center offering, which it calls Data Center Anywhere. The New York company said Tuesday that it will partner with Future Tech Enterprise to offer flexible data center designs that can be deployed at a customer premises.

Telehouse America has acquired a 60,000 square foot data center space at 85 10th Avenue in Manhattan, expanding the colocation provider’s presence in the New York market, the company said this morning. The new Telehouse New York “Chelsea” facility is scheduled to open its doors on Jan. 24, and will give the Telehouse brand a total of 39 data centers in 10 countries around the globe.

The company said the purchase of the Chelsea facility was “in direct response to the growing demand for diverse carrier neutral, colocation space in Manhattan.” The facility can accommodate up to 600 cabinets on an 18-inch raised floor and has a power capacity of 4 megawatts.

Telehouse operates two carrier hotel facilities in the New York market, located at 25 Broadway in Manhattan and 7 Teleport Drive on Staten Island. The new 85 10th Avenue data center will offer access to more than 135 networks through its New York Internet Peering Exchange (NYIIX) housed at 25 Broadway.

“With this newest facility, TELEHOUSE continues global expansion while meeting the increasing New York demand for secure, well connected and cost effective colocation facilities with a choice of IT support services,” said Noriyuki Kita, Executive Vice President of TELEHOUSE America.

Telehouse didn’t provide details on the previous use of the space. The building at 85 10th Avenue houses several data centers. Last summer the New York Post reported that Lehman Brothers was negotiating an early termination on a lease for 60,000 square feet of data center space at 85 10th Avenue.

Telehouse America this week become the latest colocation provider to introduce a modular data center offering, which it calls Data Center Anywhere.

Telehouse America this week become the latest colocation provider to introduce a modular data center offering, which it calls Data Center Anywhere. The New York company said Tuesday that it will partner with Future Tech Enterprise to offer flexible data center designs that can be deployed at a customer premises.

Telehouse which operates says the new service extends its offerings for customers who may be wary of shared space at third-party colocation centers.

“We’re trying to bring value outside the data center,” said Fred Cannone, Director of Sales and Marketing for Telehouse America. “As far as we’re concerned, this is drilling down to customer needs, particularly for larger customers. Adding Data Center Anywhere allows us to custom build the solution and any space for customer designates. The client can manage it themselves or we can manage. It now gives them an option.”

Telehouse follows the lead of Phoenix-based colocation provider i/o Data Centers, which said last month that it will expand to the New York market with a large facility in New Jersey that will be built around its i/o Anywhere modular data centers.

Cannone said modular offerings offer the combination of control over IT assets and rapid deployment of additional data canter capacity, which will be of interest to companies in financial services and pharmaceuticals, two industries that drive demand in the New York region and have significant regulatory and compliance requirements.

“Clearly a product like this speaks to a couple of verticals, especially financials and government,” said Cannone. “It doesn’t mean we’ll be taking up trailers. It will provide scalability options. The Future Tech solution with iFortess can build a very efficient data center facility.”

The iFortress modular design from Future Tech Enterprise features a snap-together solution comprised of floor, wall and ceiling panels that can be configured to customize a facility as small as 80 square feet or as large as 80,000 square feet, according to Future Tech. Customers can choose a ceiling height of 9, 10 or 12 feet, and the structure can operate indoors or outdoors.

Telehouse America is a pioneer in the colocation business, having launched in 1987 as a joint venture between Japanese telco KDDI and partners in the banking and securities industry.

New reports on the London data center market and Western Europe show increases in demand, but fundamental shifts underway. Meanwhile, European colocation provider Interxion co-chairs a Green Grid committee.

BroadGroup – European Data Center market
The Broad Group released its third bi-annual report on the European Data Center Market. It showed demand and investment in Europe increasing, but noted that power supply and financing issues will curb expansion. The report identifies close to 20 million square feet of third party data center space in 17 Western Europe markets, with the UK and Germany tied in terms of importance. BroadGroup predicts a growth rate of around 14 percent annually and believes it could be much higher if some wholesale builds can gain funding and attract large corporate customers. The report also hints at shifts in the market taking place as providers pursue new market segments, adapt new business models and enter multiple markets.

Tariff Consultancy report on London
A September 2010 report from Tariff Consultancy Ltd looks at the London data center market from 2010 to 2015. The report includes supply and demand data from 2009-2010, types of demand for space, including example deals, and a future demand forecast for data center space in the London market for 2010 – 2014. Data was supplied from the main facility businesses, including City Lifeline, COLT, Equinix, Global Switch, Interxion, TelecityGroup and Telehouse Europe.

eWeek comments on the report, saying that the total raised floor space in London is forecast to increase to 300,000 square meters (~3.2 million square feet) by 2015. It says one of the main drivers for this increase is the London ‘interconnected ecosystem’, despite the high cost of real estate. The report states that the London data center market accounts for around one half of the total UK carrier neutral data market as of the end of 2010. A known issue for the London market was confirmed in the report – the availability of appropriate power supplies.

Interxion appointed to Green Grid committee
Interxion announced that Director of Corporate Communications, Ali Moinuddin has been appointed by the Green Grid as co-chair of its European Communications Committee. As co-chair Moinuddin will be tasked with raising awareness of advanced energy efficiency in data centers and the broader ecosystem of business computing among the pan-European community.

Kevin Dean, Chief Marketing Officer, Interxion, commented, “The Green Grid is making great strides in delivering industry-standard data center practices and metrics. With Ali’s expertise and Interxion’s strong position in the pan-European data center market, I’m confident that we can contribute significantly to building awareness of The Green Grid consortium to increase the impact of its energy-efficiency leadership.”

Interxion is a founding member of the Uptime Institute’s European Chapter and a member of the European Commission‘s DG Joint Research Committee on Sustainability and its European Data Center Code of Conduct Metrics Group.

A look at Telehouse America, a pioneer in the colocation business that launched in 1987 and services financial and online media customers from facilities in Staten Island and at 25 Broadway in Manhattan.

The atrium of the Telehouse America Teleport facility in Staten Island, where the company began offering colocation services in 1987.

Telehouse America is no stranger to competition, and has thrived through both bull and bear markets in more than 20 years providing mission-critical colocation services to the financial sector in the New York area. That’s why the arrival of new competitors and new data centers doesn’t unsettle executives at Telehouse.

“It’s extremely competitive,” said Fred Cannone, Director of Sales & Marketing at Telehouse America. “It’s no secret that some of our comptitors have brought on new space and want to fill it. The competition is really coming from the facilities that have come online in New Jersey.”

The huge new and expanded data centers from NYSE Euronext (NYX), Equinix (EQIX) and Savvis (SVVS) are the response to vibrant growth in automated trading platforms seeking ever-faster connectivity to digital data and exchanges.

Founded in 1987
Telehouse America is a pioneer in the colocation business, having launched in 1987 as a joint venture between Japanese telco KDDI and partners in the banking and securities industry. Telehouse got its start in the Staten Island Teleport, a high-tech business park funded by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. With its proximity to Wall Street and a satellite uplink, the location was ideal for the Japanese financial institutions who were many of Telehouse’s early customers.

Telehouse America expanded into lower Manhattan with its 25 Broadway facility in the Cunard Building, directly across the street from the Wall Street Bull statue. The building’s fifth and sixth floors house 85,000 square feet of colocation space.

25 Broadway is also home to the New York International Internet Exchange (NYIIX), Telehouse estimates that the NYIIX is the busiest public Internet exchange point in the city. The NYIIX offers fast fiber connectivity to the New York market’s other major carrier hotels, including 60 Hudson Street, 111 Eighth Avenue, 32 Avenue of the Americas, and 165 Halsey Street in Newark, as well as the Teleport Center in Staten Island.

Adding Managed Services
After many years of focusing primarily on colocation, Telehouse America introduced managed services offerings in 2009. ”Increasingly, the model is shifting from traditional colo to what we believe is a total solution,” said Cannone, who said the company’s Manage-E services range from simple monitoring up to managing a company’s entire IT functions. “People can buy individual slices of those services.”

Financial services remains a key vertical, followed closely by online media and gaming. Telehouse America is not capacity constrained, Cannone said, noting that the Staten Island Teleport “is at about 40 percent of power capacity, so we have plenty of headroom.”

Globel Interlink Extended
On June 1 Telehouse America will begin offering its Global Interlink service to customers colocated at 60 Hudson and 111 Eighth Avenue. Companies with equipment housed in either location can connect via low latency Ethernet to all of Telehouse’s data centers in the US, UK and France at speeds up to 1 Gbps.

“Over 400 customers at both facilities can now connect to Europe via Global Interlink, ensuring they meet their specific transatlantic and metro connectivity needs, while reaping the benefits of Ethernet technology,” said Vincent Corley, Telehouse America’s Senior Marketing Manager. “This expansion strengthens the power of Global Interlink service by providing connectivity into the major communication hot spots of the US.”
