The Importance of Energy Optimization within the Modern Data Center

With more virtualization and high-density computing, the energy efficiency of a data center has become a vital consideration. In fact, IDC reports that energy consumption per server is growing by 9 percent per year globally as growth in performance pushes demand for energy.

The modern data center is now home to the cloud, big data and numerous other globally distributed technologies. With more virtualization and high-density computing, the energy efficiency of a data center has become a vital consideration. In fact, IDC reports that energy consumption per server is growing by 9 percent per year globally as growth in performance pushes demand for energy.

Technologies around cloud computing and mobility are expected grow as well. According to the white paper, overall mobile data traffic is expected to grow to 11.2 exabytes per month by 2017, a 13-fold increase over 2012.

With current and new data center providers all experiencing growth, there became a direct need to further optimize energy efficiency and utilization. To create truly efficient data centers — organizations should partner with physical infrastructure solution providers to help deliver long-lasting, powerful solutions. The idea is simple: “Measure, improve and maintain.” This means using continuously proactive tools that maintain clear visibility into data center efficiency.

According to the white paper, cooling energy inefficiencies expose the data center to:

  • Poor separation of hot and cold air causing loss of cooling effectiveness
  • Air leaking through cabinets allowing hot air circulation back into equipment inlets instead of into the CRAC units
  • Airflow obstructions that constrict cooling airflow

In combating these challenges, administrators must look at new ways to manage and optimize their data centers. This means taking a proactive approach with smart DCIM solutions which create direct visibility into the data center. The data center will always continue to evolve and expand. As more organizations see the benefits of utilizing an efficient platform, the use of intelligent management tools will grow. Download this white paper to learn how to identify the causes of data center energy inefficiencies; and what your organizations can do to create a cure with a lasting effect.
