After Sandy: Datagram Recovers From 'Apocalyptic' Flood - During Sandy, few data centers faced a bigger challenge than Datagram. the storm surge from Sandy flooded the building's basement, disabling critical pumps. “It was apocalyptic,” said CEO Alex Reppen. “It was like a tidal wave over lower Manhattan. Cars were picked up and swept away. We began to see these incredibly powerful surges of water into our basements. It was absolute chaos.”
U.S. Government Closes 64 More Data Centers - The U.S. government has closed an additional 64 data centers since its last update in August, bringing the total number of shuttered facilities to 381. The closures are part of the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative (FDCCI), a lynchpin of the Obama administration’s effort to save taxpayer funds by streamlining government IT operations.
2013: The Year of the Cloud Architect - Looking ahead, more data center providers are going to need help with evolving cloud technologies. They’ll need people who are well-versed in multiple technological disciplines who can make educated decisions in line with business needs. These engineers and architects need the ability to think and work “outside of the box” – especially with the amount of new technologies directly affecting the data center.
Syria Experiencing Internet Blackout - The country of Syria is almost completely cut off from the Internet, according to leading monitoring services. “In the global routing table, all 84 of Syria’s IP address blocks have become unreachable, effectively removing the country from the Internet," Renesys reports.
RagingWire Enters Wholesale Data Center Market - RagingWire Data Centers is entering the market for wholesale data center space, with up to 80,000 square feet of finished suites available in its facilities in Sacramento, Calif. and Ashburn, Va.
