Internap has a major new data center in the works, as well as an interesting customer win. The company is beefing up its footprint in the NY Metro area amidst its two current facilities nearing capacity, as well as growing market demand.
Internap announced plans to build a new 100,000 square foot data center in Secaucus, New Jersey. This is Internap’s third data center in the NY market, adding 45 percent more capacity to address growing demand, as its two existing facilities will near capacity over the next 12 months. The new facility is within easy access of Manhattan, the NJ turnpike, the Secaucus Junction train station and the three international airports of the New York metro area.
“We did extensive due diligence when researching the site of our new data center and believe the Secaucus location provides an ideal mix of space, power, connectivity options and access to a range of customers and industries,” said Mike Higgins, senior vice president of data center services at Internap . “With our two existing New York metro area data centers nearing capacity in the second half of 2013, the new Secaucus facility underscores our commitment to the New York market and our customers’ increasing demand for our cloud, hosting, colocation and route-optimized IP services.”
Appealing to a large swath of customers, the facility addresses growing demand from Internet, Fortune 500 and financial services customers in particular. Internap will offer colocation, managed, dedicated and cloud hosting services, route-optimized Performance IP, and content delivery network services out of the new facility.
The first phase is expected to open in the fourth quarter of next year, and will comprise 55,000 net sellable square feet at full deployment. This is a significant expansion of Internap’s company-controlled data center footprint, which includes 320,000 square feet of capacity as of end of third quarter 2012. The company will now have 12 company-controlled facilities, including a newly-opened Los Angeles facility . This continues Internap’s shift toward owning its facilities to achieve better returns on colo, and is a very sizeable commitment on its part.
The 100,000 square-foot facility will leverage modular designs and the latest power and cooling technologies, and will deliver power densities of up to 12 kW per cabinet. It will employ Internap’s green data center building practices, including a high-efficiency UPS, maximizing outside air for free cooling, reclaimed building materials, and sustainable operational best practices. A full range of customer amenities will also be available, including fully-equipped office areas, technical workspaces, dedicated customer work environments and a full-service customer lounge.
Internap’s new customer, Vix Technology , is a global provider of public transit solutions with U.S. headquarters in Seattle. The company is leveraging Internap for managed hosting, colocation, route-optimized IP for the delivery of more than 50 million passenger fare transactions annually. Vix moved over to Internap from an in-house hosted environment to improve scalability and cost efficiencies, as well as for Internap’s performance and availability level guarantees. Vix has major public transit system deployments in the U.S., including in Seattle, Martha’s Vineyard and updates to Salt Lake City to launch soon.
