Friday Funny: Vampire Data Center
October 19th, 2012 By: Colleen Miller
It’s Friday and close to Halloween so it’s time for some spooky workplace humor. Diane Alber, the Arizona artist who created Kip and Gary, brings us a new take on life in the data center, with “Vampire Data Center.”
She writes,”I’ve wanted to do a comic on ‘Vampire power’ and since Halloween is right around the corner I thought this was a perfect time. For those of you who don’t know about the term “Vampire power” – It is when power is being consumed when devices are plugged in, but are not being used. In the data center environment, servers are constantly being decommissioned but they are never pulled out or unplugged, which ends up becoming very inefficient and costly. So…Kip decides he is going to try and ward off the vampire power with garlic. . . ”
So you know the ropes, we provide the cartoon, drawn by Diane, and you, the reader, can submit the caption. Use the comments field below for your suggestions! Next week, we will choose three or so finalists, and Data Center Knowledge readers will have a chance to vote for their favorite. The winner will receive their caption in a signed print by Diane!
Hearty congratulations to Colton Brown who was the prize winner for the last cartoon about “wiring fairies” who won with” So THAT’s why they charge such high cross-connect NRCs and MRCs!”

I know that garlic is good for blood circulation but I’m not sure that it will work with cool air.

I think his name is “Giga”, I heard the server guys talking about how many Gigabytes their server has.
Are you sure that is the best way to prevent vampire power
Roy CullipherPosted October 22nd, 2012
“um, now you gotta lift one leg and sing the Transylvanian national anthem whilst crossing your eyes, but wait until I get the video camera so we can catch the release of the phantom packets and vampire power spirits”

Kip – Even vampire’s know the garlic will roast faster if you stand in the blade aisle.
It’s not working, Kip…must be counterfeit garlic…
