Data Center Links: Amazon, Microsoft, SGI, Couchbase

News from industry leaders on new database products, an acquisition and executive moves.

Noteworthy links for the data center industry include these announcements by Amazon, Microsoft, SGI and Couchbase:

SAP HANA available in AWS marketplace.  Amazon (AMZN) Web Services announced that SAP HANA, SAP’s in-memory database and platform, is certified to run on AWS and is available today for immediate purchase in the AWS Marketplace. The new on-demand option, HANA One is run on EC2 and is available with pay-as-you-go pricing, for $0.99 an hour. HANA is SAP's  in-memory data platform for performing real-time analytics, and developing and deploying real-time applications. SAP HANA One transforms decision processing by streamlining transactions, analytics, planning, predictive and text analytics on a single in-memory platform running on AWS so business can operate in real-time.

Microsoft acquires StorSimple. Microsoft (MSFT) reached a definitive agreement to acquire StorSimple, a leader in Cloud-integrated Storage (CiS) solutions. StorSimple solutions combine the data management functions of primary storage, backup, archive and disaster recovery, and with its cloud snapshot it protects and rapidly restores production data using public clouds.  “Customers faced with explosive growth in data are looking to the cloud to help them store, manage and archive that data. But, to be effective, cloud storage needs to integrate with IT’s current investments,” said Michael Park, corporate vice president, Server and Tools Division for Microsoft. “StorSimple’s approach helps customers seamlessly integrate on-premises storage with cloud storage through intelligent automation and management.”

SGI launches DataRaptor with MarkLogic.  SGI announced the DataRaptor with MarkLogic database. An integrated and optimized hardware and software solution, SGI DataRaptor is designed to make it faster and easier for organizations to generate reliable, scalable and secure Big Data results. The appliance integrates the MarkLogic enterprise-grade NoSQL database and SGI systems and uses standards-based hardware configurations designed specifically for the MarkLogic database.  "SGI DataRaptor is the latest addition to our Big Data portfolio, and is a complete and open platform that is designed to support applications deriving real business value from semi-structured and unstructured data. This is extremely difficult or impossible to do with a traditional relational database," said SGI CEO Jorge Titinger. "Jointly-developed with MarkLogic, the appliance runs the best-of-breed NoSQL database on a simple to deploy platform: just plug in and go."

Couchbase appoints Oracle executive Rahim Yaseen.  NoSQL database company Couchbase announced the appointment of Rahim Yaseen as senior vice president of product development. Yaseen joins Couchbase from Oracle where he served as vice president of engineering, leading the efforts to develop Oracle’s Core Fusion Customer Relationship Management (CRM) framework, including the technology to support the product’s SaaS -based model. At Couchbase, he will lead the company’s product development, including the company’s flagship NoSQL database offering, Couchbase Server. “We are thrilled that Yaseen has joined Couchbase. As a technical visionary with expertise in database development and cloud computing, he adds breadth and depth to our management team, and will be a significant force in extending our technology leadership," said Bob Wiederhold, CEO of Couchbase.
