Riverbed Broadens Cloud Storage Gateway Portfolio

Riverbed Technology (RVBD) has introduced a new Whitewater cloud storage gateway appliance to handle larger backup data workloads and a next generation operating system for all Whitewater appliance models.

Enterprise-ready

With an enhanced operating system for Whitewater appliances and a new high end model for as much as four times the capacity, Riverbed is targeting enterprise needs. The cloud storage gateway continues to address organizations looking to do away with tape backups. As relentless data growth has made data protection an increasingly difficult and expensive task, cloud storage has emerged as a viable alternative for some enterprises. Whitewater lets the organization securely manage and protect data, while leveraging the scale and flexibility of the cloud.

“Backup is one of the leading use cases for public cloud storage and firms are increasing their exploration and adoption of public cloud storage," said IDC, Laura Dubois, program vice president for IDC's storage practice. "What we refer to as basic public cloud storage is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 33.6 percent, indicating that worldwide spending on basic public cloud storage will be in the range of $9.2 billion by 2015.”

Whitewater 3010 and WWOS

With four times the capacity and twice the RAM, the new Whitewater 3010 model appliance is meant for larger backup data sets.  The new model supports up to 32 TB of deduplicated local storage and 160 TB of deduplicated cloud storage, and has 64 GB of internal memory. It has a maximum ingest rate of 1.5 TB per hour.

Riverbed is introducing a second version of its Whitewater Operating System (WWOS) with several new enterprise-grade features. WWOS 2.0 offers an increased ingest rate, remote management for central administration and control, proactive alerting, and integration with Windows Active Directory. A new enterprise management dashboard provides at-a-glance status of the appliance, storage, replication status and performance metrics with a Google Finance-like drill down for detailed views and reporting. WWOS 2.0 is optimized for specific applications such as Veeam vPower that can execute a VM from a backup job.

“By working closely with customers that have deployed our Whitewater cloud storage gateway appliances and incorporating feedback from our growing base of enterprise users, we are introducing several new features,” saidRiverbed Whitewater Cloud Storage General Manager Ray Villeneuve. “Enterprises now have the capacity, enhanced performance, management features, and security they need to cost-efficiently and seamlessly send and store backup and infrequently used archival data off-site to public and private storage clouds. Now a broader range of organizations have a fast, secure and reliable method to meet their recovery time and recovery point objectives and enhance their data management strategies.”
