SynapSense, Equinix Team on Energy Challenge

DCIM solution provider SynapSense has teamed with Equinix and Custom Mechanical Systems to win the Green Data Center Innovation Challenge sponsored by the government of Singapore. The project is anticipated to result in more than $700,000 per year in energy savings.

SynapSense, a provider of data center infrastructure management (DCIM) software, has teamed with Equinix and Custom Mechanical Systems to win the Green Data Center Innovation Challenge sponsored by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA). The competition was developed to help improve energy efficiency in the data center sector in Singapore, currently a hot market for data center development.

The Equinix "SG1 Cooling Energy Efficiency Project" has begun implementation of the SynapSense real-time monitoring and Active Control solution, which helps automate the management of data center cooling. The project is anticipated to result in more than $700,000 per year in energy savings and will be fully functional by December. The proposal from Equinix and SynapSense was chosen by the Singapore IDA based on "the level of innovation and the degree of viability, achievability and practicality; as well as impact in terms of improvement in energy efficiency and projected cost savings."

The project also includes the first implementation of the Singapore government's new SS564 Green Data Center Standard's cooling and power distribution energy efficiency metrics with continuous real-time monitoring on a SynapSense dashboard to baseline the data centers energy use.

"We are encouraged by the Singapore government's support and emphasis on green initiatives like the local green standard for data centers," said Clement Goh, managing director of Equinix South Asia. "Through our partnership with SynapSense, we continue to execute innovative and environmentally friendly initiatives that help drive down energy consumption for our customers who are increasingly embracing green IT and energy efficiency."

"SynapSense is very pleased to partner with Equinix to provide our Data Center Optimization Platform for such a significant project, and together we are honored to be selected by the IDA to help the Singapore government achieve unprecedented data center energy savings," said Peter Van Deventer, President and CEO of SynapSense.

The team of SynapSense, Equinix and CMS was one of four consortiums selected by the IDA to help improve energy efficiency as much as 35 percent in Singapore's data center sector.Other winners honored in the Green Data Centre Innovation Challenge includes Toshiba Asia Pacific Pte Ltd (partnering with Nanyang Technological University), ClearManage Pte Ltd (partnering with AsiaSoft Pte Ltd, NEC Singapore and Nanyang Polytechnic), and 1-Net Singapore Pte Ltd (partnering with Envrocon Pte Ltd).
