Hadoop Summit 2012 was held in San Jose this week, featuring many thought leaders from the Apache Hadoop community and real-world stories of best practices.
The innovation behind Hadoop-powered data processing and analysis has scored a number of headlines for big data, and momentum continues to grow for the open-source software elephant in the enterprise. Commercial Hadoop vendor Hortonworks and Yahoo were hosts for the 2012 Summit for Apache Hadoop users, developers and vendors. Hortonworks
Before the Hadoop Summit started Horton Works debuted its Data Platform (HDP) offering, as a partner-centric distribution of Hadoop. Hortonworks announced strong support in the partner ecosystem for HDP from companies such as Attunity, Dataguise, Datameer, Karmasphere, Kognitio, MarkLogic, Microsoft, NetApp, StackIQ, Syncsort, Talend, 10gen, Teradata and VMware. Hortonworks Data Platform 1.0 will be available June 15, 2012.
NetApp Hadoop Solutions
NetApp (NTAP) announced a strategic partnership with Hortonworks to develop and pretest joint Apache Hadoop solutions using Hortonworks Data Platform. These solutions will help customers simplify access to their data and gain deeper business insight to make the right decisions faster. The two companies’ development work will be contributed back to the Apache Hadoop community with the aim of driving greater Hadoop adoption in the enterprise and providing improved capabilities such as cluster performance and storage utilization, service-level agreement attainment, and data availability.
"Our strategic relationship with Hortonworks and our new NetApp Open Solution for Hadoop Rack align with our strategy to partner with best-of-breed companies to deliver integrated solutions that give our customers greater flexibility and interoperability," said Rich Clifton, senior vice president, Solutions and Integrations Group, NetApp. "While other storage vendors use proprietary solutions that limit the use and interoperability of their big data or Hadoop solutions, we intend to give customers choices, whether they’re looking to work with the analytical tools they already have, deploy an entirely new Hadoop solution, or just experiment with Hadoop."
Savvis Hadoop Solutions
Savvis, a CenturyLink company (CTL) announced a strategic agreement with Hortonworks, enabling Savvis to leverage Hadoop to offer cloud-based big data solutions for enterprises. Hortonworks Data Platform will be integrated with the Savvis Symphony suite of cloud services, simplifying the movement of data between the Hadoop-based platform hosted by Savvis and enterprise data systems.
"Enterprises are increasingly interested in and exploring big data solutions. The combination of the Hortonworks Data Platform with the pay-per-use model, agility and simplicity of Savvis' industry-leading cloud services will offer tremendous value to our clients," said Steve Garrou, vice president of global solutions management at Savvis. "Ultimately, Savvis' strategic agreement with Hortonworks will enable enterprises to leverage Hadoop to create valuable information through the searching, indexing and analyzing of sizeable quantities of information assembled from multiple sources."
