has confirmed that it will invest $300 million in expanding its data center operations in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Coming four years after the opening of the company’s first facility in Iowa, the expansion will bring Google’s investment in Council Bluffs to more than $900 million, and create at least 50 additional jobs.
“Since opening our data center operations here in 2009, we have been committed to Council Bluffs and to Iowa,” said Google Data Center Operations Manager Chris Russell. “We have an outstanding workforce in the Council Bluffs area, and we are so appreciative of the exceptional welcome we have received from the local community and the state of Iowa. We are glad to be in Iowa, and Google’s future here is very bright.”
“We welcome the news today of Google’s plans to continue investing in Iowa,” said Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad. “Google’s decision to increase the size of its data center in Council Bluffs highlights the attractiveness of our state as a place to invest and do business. Google is a proud U.S. company and one of the leading innovators in the world, and is recognized for creating innovative tools that help businesses and individuals succeed.”
Google said the new data center is not related to reports that Google has applied for permission to build satellite antennas
in the Council Bluffs area.
The announcement is the latest in a series of data center expansion announcements for Google. Earlier this month, the company said it would double the size
of its data center campus in Mayes County, Oklahoma.
