News from the European data centre and tech community includes Interxion opening an additional data centre in Frankfurt, Adapt acquiring UK outsourcing and cloud company eLINIA, TeleCityGroup landing a luxury hotel chain as a client, and Equinix adding Deutsche Telekom to its Ethernet exchange.

Interxion Opens Seventh Data Centre in Frankfurt - Interxion (INXN), a provider of carrier-neutral colocation services in Europe, added more than 1,500 square meters of equipped space and 2 megawatts of customer power from renewable sources to its existing large data centre footprint, with its opening of its new data centre on its Frankfurt campus.

The new data centre addresses the consistent growth in customer demand for highly connected applications in Interxion's "Cloud Hub." As previously announced, Interxion plans to add new capacity in 2012 across its existing footprint, including new builds in Paris (PAR 7), London (LON 2) and Amsterdam (AMS 6). In total, Interxion has announced that it will add over 12,000 square meters of equipped space in 2012, representing a nearly 20 percent increase in the company's total space at year end 2011.

To date, Interxion has more than 1,200 customers through 29 data centres in 11 European countries and leverages its uniformly designed, energy-efficient data centres for customers with extensive security and uptime needs for their mission-critical applications. Its customers come from the connectivity, digital media, financial services and cloud service segments.

Adapt Acquires eLINIA -  Adapt, an independent IT managed services provider, will acquire eLINIA, a UK company specializing in IT infrastructure outsourcing, for £13 million. eLINIA delivers high quality, secure infrastructure services to many of the UK’s most established organisations across a range of industries. The combined annual revenue of the blended company will exceed £50 million.

Based in Cardiff, eLINIA was founded in 2004. Access to new high quality data centre facilities in Cardiff, Newport and Slough will also offer extra diversity for Adapt customers, who can now choose to base their primary IT or disaster recovery operations in those facilities or in Adapt’s data centres across London and the South East.

Luxury Hospitality Chain De Vere Group Chooses TelecityGroup - De Vere Group, a luxury hotel and hospitality chain with 65 UK locations, selected TelecityGroup to host its core IT infrastructure in one of TelecityGroup’s data centres in Manchester, UK. TelecityGroup’s secure, resilient and highly connected facility will enable De Vere Group to implement an innovative virtualisation project, designed to reduce the company’s overall IT footprint. Through server consolidation and the installation of blade servers, De Vere Group expects to achieve a £100,000 cost reduction.

“Our central IT systems are the heartbeat of our business," Jo Stanford, IT Director, De Vere Group said. "Any downtime would have a severe impact on our business; both in terms of the service we provide our customers and our overall revenue. Therefore, we need to have total confidence in our central infrastructure."

In addition to its eight data centres in London, TelecityGroup operates three data centres in central Manchester.

Deutsche Telekom Joins the Equinix Ethernet Exchange - Equinix (EQIX), a provider of global data centre services, announced that Deutsche Telekom International Carrier Sales & Solutions (ICSS), the wholesale arm of Deutsche Telekom AG, joined the Equinix Ethernet Exchange. Deutsche Telekom, the largest telecommunications business in Europe, now has automatic access to Platform Equinix and a 4,000-strong global ecosystem of networks, enterprises, cloud and content service providers.

Also, this pact expands the depth and reach of carrier Ethernet services available through the Equinix Ethernet Exchange to connect to millions of locations within Deutsche Telekom’s strong on-net coverage in Western, Central and Eastern Europe, including Germany. Launched in 2010, the Equinix Ethernet Exchange has more than 58 members providing access to many millions of service locations in about 100 countries.  It enables service providers, cloud and Software as a Service providers and their customers to build elastic end-to-end SLA-based services across a global Layer 2 Ethernet footprint, with faster provisioning time and scalable bandwidth, according to the company.

“The participation of Deutsche Telekom is a major milestone for our Ethernet Exchange,” said Dick Theunissen, chief marketing officer for Equinix in EMEA. “They add greater diversity and reach for Ethernet end-users and, at the same time, generate new partnership and revenue opportunities within the global Equinix Marketplace.”
