The OFC/NFOEC - The Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC) and the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (NFOEC) is underway this week in Los Angeles, and networking companies Kotura, Juniper and Infinera have made announcements. The conference can be followed on Twitter hashtag #ofcnfoec and the OFC/NFOEC YouTube channel .
Kotura unveils low power 100Gbps Optical engine. Silicon photonics company Kotura will unveil its low-power 100 gigabits per second (Gb/s) optical engine to support the interconnect fabric at the OFC/NFOEC conference. Kotura’s optical engine has been deployed around the world since 2006 and used by three of the five largest telecommunication OEMs. “The optical engine provides our customers with an inexpensive, small form factor that reduces power consumption and provides a high level of integration,” said Mehdi Asghari, CTO of Kotura. “Moreover, we are addressing the need for green solutions that will alleviate some of the strain associated with power hogs such as data centers and high performance computers. This is an important milestone, and we look forward to being a part of new computing solutions that outperform what is possible today.” According to Brad Smith, senior vice president at Lightcounting, a market research firm, the advantages of silicon photonics are enormous, enabling long-haul optical WDM to move to the server and switch rack. Silicon photonics and WDM allow modulation speed to bump up to 40G/50G and more channels in the future without having to upgrade the entire fiber plant. As part of Kotura’s optical engine demo at OFC, Anritsu Company will be using its bit error rate tester, the MP1800A, to support 100 Gb/s networking applications.
Juniper and Nokia Siemens launch solution. Juniper Networks (JNPR) and Nokia Siemens Networks announced the launch of the Integrated Packet Transport Network solution, comprised of the Juniper PTX Packet Transport Switches and the Nokia Siemens Networks hiT 7300 high capacity optical packet transport platform. Designed to reduce the amount of hardware needed and lower both capex and opex, the solution will include network management integration and end-to-end network planning for layers zero to three multi-layer optimization. The solution is designed to have data, management and control plane integration between the IP/MPLS and DWDM layers, allowing operators to simplify their network and have a tighter connection between IP/MPLS and the photonic network. “To improve the economics of core network provisioning, service providers must reduce infrastructure and operating costs while improving the efficiency of service delivery and the user experience,” said Daniel Hua, senior vice president of engineering at Juniper. ”Service providers measure success on building and implementing a more effective operating model for their core transport networks, which is the very foundation of our new packet-transport solution with Nokia Siemens Networks.”
Infinera demonstrates 2Tb/s small form factor DN-X platform. Infinera (INFN) announced that it will demonstrate a new 2 Tb/s small form factor DTN-X platform at the OFC/NFOEC conference. On display will be a half-rack small form factor XTC-4 chassis with 2 Tb/s of integrated OTN switching and simulating typical high-bandwidth transport links on customer networks. The Infinera DTN-X platform includes programmable coherent technology to allow scaling up to 1Tb/s of slot capacity and 5 Tb/s per bay today, and up to 10 Tb/s per bay and 100 Tb/s in a multi-bay configuration in the future. Both the XTC-4 and XTC-10 chassis are planned for availability in the first half of 2012. Infinera Chief Marketing Officer Dave Welch was a speaker at a special symposium of the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association.
