For your weekend reading, here’s a recap of five noteworthy stories that appeared on Data Center Knowledge this past week. Enjoy!
eBay Containers Push Frontiers of Efficiency – eBay’s new containerized data center in Phoenix is one of the most efficient data centers ever built, recording exceptional performance on industry metrics while operating in temperatures as high as 115 degrees F, according to a report released this week.
AMD to Acquire Server Innovator SeaMicro – In a bold move to boost its position in next-generation servers, AMD will acquire low-power server specialist SeaMicro for $334 million, the companies said today. The acquisition is a disruptive one for the low-power server landscape, as SeaMicro has been using Intel chips.
Harris Exits Cloud Hosting, Will Sell Data Center – Harris Corporation (HRS) will discontinue its Cyber Integrated Solutions operation and sell a data center facility in Harrisonburg, Virginia, taking a loss of at least $70 million on the operation. The systems integrator said its security-conscious customers prefer to build solutions in their own data centers rather than host them in third-party facilities.
The New Data Center Geography – The pursuit of cheap power and lower taxes is changing the face of the data center industry, placing huge facilities in remote locations far removed from the users. But unlike the shifts that altered the map for manufacturing, data center location is not a zero-sum game – existing data center hubs continue to thrive, even as “Internet-scale” facilities set up camp in far-flung locations.
RightScale, Equinix Partner on Cloud Services – In a blue-chip partnership targeting the intersection of colocation and the cloud, data center service provider Equinix and cloud computing specialist RightScale are helping customers connect private clouds with large-scale public clouds, along with access to leading cloud management tools.
