CyrusOne Plans 700,000 SF Dallas Data Center

Continuing its expansion, CyrusOne has acquired a 700,00 square foot building near Dallas and will develop 400,000 square feet of high-density data center space, the company said Thursday

It's said that they like things big in Texas, and that's certainly true of the new CyrusOne data center near Dallas. The 700,00 square foot building will feature more than 400,000 square feet of data center space , the company said Thursday in announcing details of the facility, which we first noted last month.

CyrusOne, a unit of Cincinnati Bell, specializes in high-density colocation. The company is in the midst of an aggressive expansion of its data center footprint to meet demand from a customer list that includes 15 of the top global 100 companies and five of the top 10.  The company says it expects the Dallas facility will be the largest data center in Texas - which is likely true for dedicated stand-alone data centers, although the multi-tenant Infomart carrier hotel in Dallas is larger at 1.6 million square feet.

Suffice it to say that the new data center is big even by Texas standards.

A 'Web-Scale' Enterprise Data Center

"I am really excited about this project, as it’s of the size and scale that historically was only available to the giant ‘Web-scale’ companies," said Kevin Timmons, CTO of CyrusOne. "The product that we will deliver to the Dallas market will be unique from a number of perspectives not only in terms of size, but more importantly we will be able to take advantage of free air cooling and will implement several cutting-edge concepts in our electrical back plane that all translates into lower costs for our customers and helps the environment."

The building sits on a  30-acre parcel of land, and will include 60,000 square feet of office space in addition to both raised-floor and slab data center space. Timmons says CyrusOne may use indirect evaporative cooling, which will allow it to leverage outside air in its cooling system. The company said it anticipates gaining Platinum certification, the highest level possible under the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating for energy efficient buildings from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The Dallas site is the third acquisition CyrusOne has completed in Texas in the past two months. In November, the company acquired a 175,000-square-foot facility in Houston, and in December, it boght a 200,000-square-foot facility in San Antonio. CyrusOne has also announced plans for a campus in  Phoenix that will eventually house 1 million square feet of data center space, and is scouting opportunities on the East Coast as well.

"The demand by our Fortune 500 customers for high-quality enterprise-class facilities has been tremendous," said Gary Wojtaszek, president and CEO of CyrusOne. "Our goal with this facility is to provide our customers with a higher quality product than they would ever consider building for themselves and also design it in such a way that it will be 50 percent more efficient than what they could ever achieve."
