In an Introduction to Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM), Raritan has written both an explanation of and a case for DCIM. This whitepaper quotes industry leading periodicals and research firms such as Gartner, IDC and Computerworld on how the data center is evolving and explains how this development justifies the need for advanced monitoring tools.

Data center insight and control is typically the domain of several dedicated staffers mapping the operation via Excel spreadsheets and Visio. Once beyond 50 – 75 racks this type of management is not practical given all the considerations for optimization. These considerations include controlling expenses, best utilization of resources and extending the life of equipment. A DCIM solution can help unify the efforts of the three main domains (Facilities, Networking and Systems) charged with this optimization.

This whitepaper is a DCIM primer but it goes beyond the “what is…” to explain the practical why and how through a concise explanation including a checklist of questions that will enhance the data center professional’s understanding of the technology.
