Rayburn: Akamai Needs to Evolve

For many years, Akamai Technologies dominated the content delivery business, even as rivals Limelight Networks and Level 3 and a bevy of venture-backed startups sought to crack the CDN market in a bigger way. But that's changed in recent years, as new players like Cotendo and EdgeCast have eroded Akamai's market share and mindshare. Dan Rayburn, who tracks the CDN market closely, has put together a lengthy analysis of the company's challenges, and doesn't pull any punches.

"Simply put, Akamai needs to evolve," Rayburn writes. "The market has changed and Akamai is not changing with it. They need to change their message, they need to open up to customers, they need to respond to RFPs faster and they have to stop operating their business with the attitude that no one can possibly compete with Akamai's network technology."
