SoftLayer Plans Australian Expansion

As SoftLayer continues its global expansion, the company is focusing on Australia as the location of a new data center, and may lease space from Digital Realty Trust (DLR), IT News reports.

As SoftLayer continues its global expansion, the company is focusing on Australia as the location of a new data center. IT News reports that SoftLayer CEO Lance Crosby said the company is in discussions to lease space from facilities provider Digital Realty Trust.

"Over the next 12 to 18 months, we look at the Australian and Brazilian markets as the next expansion," Crosby told IT News. "Our goal is to populate pods all around the globe to get closer to our customers."

Several Options With Digital Realty

Digital Realty has acquired land in Sydney and Melbourne for future data center projects. SoftLayer said it hasn't yet decided on which site is more attractive.

"We're going to look at both Sydney and Melbourne, then sit down and do a latency map of what local networks look like," Crosby said.

More than 40 percent of SoftLayer's customers are located outside the United States. The company said in Juy that it is expanding its infrastructure to Europe and Asia, with plans for network points of presence on both continents and a new data center in Singapore.  The new PoPs will be located in London, Paris, Frankfurt, Moscow, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

To accelerate its global network, SoftLayer said Tuesday that it has completed upgrading the edge network routers across its wide area network (WAN), installing Juniper Networks MX 3D Universal Edge Routers to all facilities and network points-of-presence. The new routers increase the company’s routing footprint by 400 percent adding four times the port capacity.
