One of the largest global financial services companies has gone live with a 3.6 megawatt data center installation at the huge new i/o New Jersey
facility in Edison, N.J. The customer equipment was installed and brought into production in just 90 days using the i/o Anywhere modular data center, the company said.
i/o did not identify the customer. But the company said prompt installation of an anchor tenant from the financial industry provides additional evidence that the enterprise market is open to a pre-fabricated modular deployment model. The i/o Anywhere system was manufactured at the i/o factory in Phoenix, Ariz. and delivered to New Jersey for customer deployment.
Demonstrates Acceptance of Modular Model
“Global 2000 companies are telling us they are moving away from the legacy real estate-based data center model to next generation, Data Center 2.0 strategies; just-in-time, productized, scalable and software-optimized data center solutions,” said George Slessman, CEO of i/o. “Having a large enterprise customer go from inception to production in just 90 days after opening i/o New Jersey clearly demonstrates that our i/o Anywhere solution can rapidly provide the digital energy required for enterprise-class, always-on information technology infrastructure.”
The Phoenix-based company sees its factory-built i/o Anywhere enclosures as the future of the data center business, offering a predictable energy-efficient design that can be deployed rapidly and bought in smaller installments than wholesale space. Some analysts agree.
“The era of monolithic data centers is over. Modular data center solutions are the future – and happening today,” said Michelle Bailey, Research Vice President of IDC. “Adopting a modular platform means companies can deploy a data center when they need it – not months or years later – with a pay-as-you-grow path to guide future expansion.”
In March i/o announced plans to transform a former New York Times printing plant in New Jersey into the world’s largest modular data center
. The 830,000 square foot building in Edison, N.J. will become the East Coast hub for i/o, which is converting the building into a facility to house data center capacity in customized containers. in February the company opened a factory
in Phoenix to build its i/o Anywhere modules, which will eventually be able to deploy up to 18 megawatts of data center capacity each month.
