Video: What Does 'Modular' Mean?

The term "modular data center" is beginning to experience some of the same definition problems that have plagued cloud computing. In this video, Jason Schafer of Tier1 discusses the problem, and the four emerging categories of modular data center deployment.

Modular data centers were a hot topic at the recent Uptime Institute Symposium 2011, where modular design featred in numerous presentations and panels. Tier1 Research senior analyst Jason Schafer says that the modular market is experiencing segmentation and some challenges with definitions. "The term modular has suffered from its popularity, similar to the way that cloud has," said Schafer. "Modular means a lot of different things to a lot of different folks." In this video, Jason outlines four different categories of data center projects using the term "modular" and how they differ. This video runs about 11 minutes.
