Roundup: SGI, Juniper, LayeredTech, Zonit

SGI gear selected by Japan Energy Lab, Juniper Networks selected by Russian mobile network Megafon, Layered Tech highlights CloudBook study, Zonit Micro ATS receives UL approval.

Here’s a roundup of some of this week’s headlines from the data center and hosting industry:

SGI selected by Japan's Semiconductor Energy Lab. SGI announced that Japan's Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL) has purchased a high performance computing (HPC) solution consisting of an SGI Altix ICE 8400 to accelerate the research and development of semiconductor technology.  The SEL will use the system for research and development work on thin-film integrated circuits, liquid crystal and electroluminescent displays, semiconductor thin-film transistors, solar cells, and batteries.  The system will have 3,840 Intel Xeon 5600 cores with 15 TB of memory. "The business-critical technical computing challenges our customers face demand solutions that offer a dramatic increase in speed and performance," said Nobuhiko Nakatsu, president of SGI Japan. "With the SGI Altix ICE 8400 series we are able to offer our customers the high end of design and development compute solutions in a very flexible and robust platform."

Juniper selected by Megafon. Juniper Networks (JNPR) announced that MegaFon, one of Russia's major mobile networks and the first to launch national 3G services, has implemented Juniper SRX Services Gateways and MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers to deliver its subscribers secure, scalable and faster high performance mobile Internet services. With over 56 million subscribers MegaFon is the only mobile network company in Russia operating its own network.  Using the MX edge routers lets MegaFon simplify its core and edge network while increasing capacity while the 3D Universal Edge routers give a high port density routing and switching.  "Juniper Networks' networking and security solutions provide MegaFon with a highly scalable and reliable infrastructure by eliminating bottlenecks to an open mobile Internet experience," said Igor Parfenov, chief technical officer at MegaFon.

Layered Tech highlights Cloudbook study.  Layered Tech highlighted a Cloudbook article providing an in-depth look at JDA Managed Services' process of evaluating and selecting Layered Tech as their  private cloud provider. Supply chain solutions company JDA was faced with taking a multitude of disparate software, platforms and data centers and consolidating 1 million users from over 100 countries into a single hosted cloud environment.  With the help of consultants from Burstorm that challenge was met with Layered Tech satisfying the unique RFP requirements and moving them to the cloud. Speaking of Layered Tech's flexibility JDA SVP Joseph King said  “they were flexible enough to allow us to purchase certain pieces, have it delivered and then took the responsibility of the build-out so we were able to begin to lay the software down to deliver the JDA Managed Services solution.”

Zonit Micro ATS receives UL approval.  Zonit Structured Solutions announced that it has received approval from the Underwriter's Laboratory for its new Micro Automatic Transfer Switch, a feature-rich, affordable, ultra-small form-factor, highly efficient (zero 'U') automatic power transfer switch. “Receiving approval from Underwriter’s Laboratory is a significant milestone for Zonit, because we now can proceed to manufacturing,” said Zonit Chairman & Founder Bill Pachoud. “Response to this efficient device from customers and distributors has been very strong, and the UL approval was the last step needed to be able to manufacture and bring the Zonit Micro ATS to market.” The μATS takes no rack space and provides a redundant "A-B" power to single power supply devices such as routers and servers.
