High-density colocation specialist CyrusOne is planning a major expansion in Austin, Texas, the company said this week. CyrusOne, which is owned by Cincinnati Bell, announced plans to build a 72,000 square foot data center in Austin, part of a long-term expansion that could see the company build up to to 288,000 square feet of additional data center space on its campus. The buildout, which will begin this month, is scheduled to occur in four phases as demand.
The new facility is CyrusOne’s second in the Austin market, where it currently operates a 50,000 square foot data center opened in the fall of 2009.
“We’ve been wildly successful in Austin and need to add inventory to service enterprises in need of high availability colocation space. We’ve seen a multitude of companies re-evaluating their data center colocation needs and moving to the Austin area,” said David Ferdman, CEO of CyrusOne . “This greenfield development is yet another opportunity to demonstrate our innovation and long-term commitment to local and Silicon Valley companies doing business in Austin.”
The new Austin facility will be located at the MetCenter II, which features two separate on-site electric substations and the potential to expand to 400 megawatts of capacity from separate power sources feeding the local grid.
CyrusOne was acquired by Cincinnati Bell for $525 million last year. It is continuing to operate as a stand-alone business, but is benefiting from having a parent company with resources to fund expansion. Earlier this month the company announced plans to open a 10,000 square foot data center in London .
