Astro Energy Group of San Diego today launched a  portable data center, known as the Emergency Mobile Data Center (EMDC), and delivered the first unit to El Centro Regional Medical Center, which had its primary data center condemned due to damage from an earthquake in April 2010.

The EMDC was unveiled for an audience of San Diego political and business leaders, where Astro Energy Group CEO James Masias introduced the unit, which can provide emergency power and data backup to hospitals, military bases, and manufacturing plants. Astro Energy Group is an "energy performance contractor" that specializes in energy efficiency projects and HVAC design. The company began as a partnership between two Southern California contracting firms, Chula Vista Electric and Astro Mechanical Services.

The first EMDC is housed in a 12 foot by 60 foot trailer, which has been retrofitted and customized for El Centro Regional Medical Center. The facility that housed the hospital's IT department was damaged by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake on April 4, 2010. Astro Energy said the EMDC has garnered strong, nationwide interest from both the public and private sector.
