What to Read at DCK: Week of November 27

Google building new data centers in the Carolinas, Toshiba offers modular design, the Swiss lake-cooled data center (DeepGreen), plus everything you wanted to know about the Apple data center.

For your weekend reading, here’s a recap some of the noteworthy stories that appeared on Data Center Knowledge this past week:

  • Google Building Two More Data Centers - Google is expanding its data center capacity with new construction in the Carolinas, the company said this week. Citing the need for additional server capacity, Google is completing work on a second data center at its campus in Goose Creek, South Carolina, while a similar project is underway at the company’s project in Lenoir, North Carolina.
  • The Apple Data Center FAQ - We’ve compiled our coverage of Apple’s new facility in North Carolina into a series of Frequently Asked Questions. Here’s the Apple Data Center FAQ (or “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Apple’s Data Centers”).
  • Toshiba Offers Modular Data Center Design - Toshiba Corporation has entered the modular data center business, the company said this week. Toshiba has completed a prototype modular design at a demonstration facility at its Fuchu Complex in western Tokyo as a first step in entering the Japanese market.
  • DeepGreen: Swiss Lake-Cooled Data Center - The DeepGreen data center is a 46 megawatt facility planned on the shores of Lake Walensee in Switzerland. The facility is cooled using 43F source water from 197 feet below the surface.
  • Intel Launches Configurable Atom Processor - Intel (INTC) announced the configurable Atom processor E600C series, which features an Intel Atom E600 processor paired with an Altera Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). Formerly codenamed ‘Tunnel Creek’ the new Atom processor is designed to be flexible and allow customers to customize designs and enable a quicker time-to-market.
