Roundup: Active Power, Juniper, Level 3, Isilon

Active Power receives large PowerHouse order, Juniper selected by China Mobile, Level 3 to provide backhaul services for FOX Sports, Webtrends scales out with Isilon.

Here’s a roundup of this week’s headlines from the data center and hosting industry:

Active Power receives PowerHouse order. Active Power (ACPW) announced a PowerHouse solution order from a large United Kingdom based consumer goods manufacturing company.  Set to be installed later this year the 40-foot containerized system will provide complete power conditioning and protection for the customer's UK data center. "More capital is tied up in a traditional brick and mortar build out particularly if it’s a lengthy project," said Dietmar Papenfort, vice president, Sales for Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific. "Our containerized power infrastructure system can be deployed in a ‘just in time,’ modular fashion, enabling the customer to more closely match capital investments to real time business and IT demands."

Juniper selected by China Mobile.  Juniper Networks (JNPR) announced that the Shaanxi provincial arm of China Mobile has upgraded its Internet data center with Juniper's New Network based on the Junos operating system to ensure the subscriber experience and improve the economics of the rapidly growing network. China mobile has deployed the MX960 Universal Edge Routers for core routing and EX4200 Ethernet switches deployed in a Virtual Chassis fabric configuration. "China Mobile Shaanxi has long been a Juniper customer, but this significant project takes us beyond the established confines of the carrier network and into the data center with them for the first time," said Mike Marcellin, vice president of product marketing, Infrastructure Products and Junos Ready Software at Juniper Networks.

Level 3 selected by FOX Sports. Level 3 Communications (LVLT) announced it will provide FOX Sports with its Vyvx VenueNet+ sports broadcasting services including video, voice and Internet in venues throughout the U.S. for the 2010 professional football season.  As an expansion of an existing contract between Level 3 and FOX the contract will provide backhaul services from sports venues back to FOX Sports headquarters, deliver high-speed Internet access directly from the VenueNet+ panel and will provide phone line services from each VenueNet+ installation. "With VenueNet+, Level 3 is providing a one-stop-shop to meet our broadcast requirements, in addition to significant new services like high-speed Internet, which enables new workflows for us to consider," said Keith Goldberg, vice president of Transmission and Resiliency at FOX Networks Engineering & Operations. “Our goal is to provide our viewers with the highest-quality viewing experience possible, and Level 3’s VenueNet+ services are helping us do that much more effectively with the NFL."

Webtrends scales out with Isilon. Isilon (ISLN) announced that analytics company Webtrends has deployed Isilon scale-out storage to power its development environments.  Webtrends has consolidated more than 700 virtual servers by combining VMware vSphere with Isilon's X-Series, featuring its OneFS operating system. "As we scaled our business to meet increasing demand, virtualization presented a clear path to improved efficiency and agility," said Josh Wisely, systems engineer, Webtrends. "However, it created a management nightmare for our previous storage system. With Isilon, that's no longer an issue - management is simple, application performance is up and we're utilizing resources more efficiently. Plus, with Isilon's new iSCSI capability, I can manage both file- and block-level applications from one, easy-to-use file system."
