Asia-Pacific: Cisco, NEXTDC, Juniper, NSW Govt.

Cisco and Teliti collaborate on a data center, NEXTDC acquires properties in Melbourne and Brisbane, SingTel adopts Juniper gear, New South Wales government develops consolidation contractor short list.

Here’s a roundup of some of this week’s headlines from the data center and hosting industry:

Cisco and Teliti collaborate on data center. Cisco (CSCO) announced its collaboration toward a green data center with Teliti Datacenters, a locally owned systems integrator, at the inaugural Cisco Summit Malaysia 2010. The two companies will share best practices and develop data center management and governance models for Teliti's data center infrastructure technology in Malaysia. "A 'green' data center will not only provide the organization with a strong strategic advantage with the new efficiencies it could generate but also help it align with the Malaysian government's environmental goals," said Anne Abraham, managing director of Cisco Malaysia. "Cisco's collaboration with Teliti is part of our contribution to this national agenda." The first 45,000 square foot development phase is expected to be completed by December 2011 and reduce carbon emissions by 30 to 40 percent.

NEXTDC Buys Two Properties: NEXTDC, the Australian data center startup launched recently by Pipe Networks founder Bevan Slattery, said this week that it has acquired land in both Melbourne and Brisbane. "We have acquired 14,300 square meters of vacant land in Port Melbourne to construct cutting edge, purpose-built concrete data centres," said Slattery. "The property is large enough to allow for future expansion and will create a data centre campus over time as demand increased. We have also acquired a solid concrete building in Brisbane CBD with net lettable area of approx 2,300 square meters. This property will enable NEXTDC to address immediate demand for data centre space in Brisbane." Slattery said NEXTDC hopes to acquire another Brisbane property in coming weeks.

Juniper selected by SingTel.  Juniper Networks (JNPR) announced that Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel), one of Asia Pacific's leading communications group, is using Juniper's high performance, high-availability Ethernet switching solutions to support its customers' Carrier Ethernet requirements.  "Juniper's EX4200 Ethernet Switches allow SingTel to scale its market leading Carrier Ethernet services without overwhelming complexity and loss of performance," said Andy Ingram, vice president of product marketing and business development, Fabric and Switching Technologies, Juniper Networks. In addition to deploying the Junos OS across the EX switches, SingTel also deploys Juniper Networks M Series Multiservice Edge Routers in its POPs.  Juniper also announced that the Shanghai Branch of China Telecom Corporation has deployed its multi-chassis routing system in a production environment.

NSW Government reveals short data center list. The New South Wales government has revealed a potential list of suppliers for its data center consolidation initiative.  The NSW consolidation project will take 130 data centers into two sites over a ten year period. The five successful participants are Global Switch, Macquarie Capital (and Digital Realty Trust), Gresham, Leighton Contractors and the Plenary Group Unit Trust.  "The shortlisted applicants have demonstrated they can meet the high standards set by the government. They will have the opportunity to tender for the construction, operation and ongoing management of the two facilities," said Commerce Minister Paul Lynch.
