Here’s a roundup of some of some of this week’s headlines from the storage industry:
NetApp announces StorageGRID. NetApp (NTAP) announced the availability of NetApp StorageGRID , a solution designed to manage petabyte-scale globally distributed repositories of images, video, and records for enterprises and service providers. StorageGRID is a product of the recent acquisition of Bycast and continues NetApp’s push into cloud storage infrastructure. “It is complementary to the existing NetApp storage portfolio since it sits as an application above the storage systems and virtualizes the storage environment,” said Terri McClure, senior analyst at ESG. StorageGRID is available immediately in North America.
Isilon selected by Joint Genome Insitute. Isilon Systems (ISLN) announced that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Joint Genome Institute (JGI) has deployed more than two petabytes of Isilon scale-out NAS to power a wide range of genomic research initiatives into clean energy generation and environmental characterization and cleanup. The JGI has executed consolidation strategies for storage, using Isilon’s X-Series and S-Series 5000S-SSD scale-out NAS. “Isilon’s ability to eliminate data fragmentation and performance bottlenecks via OneFS promises to help the JGI accelerate the delivery of information to its community of researchers,” said Sam Grocott, vice president of marketing at Isilon.
Nasuni adds Rackspace support. Cloud storage gateway company Nasuni announced that it has partnered with Rackspace Hosting (RAX) to offer customers a simple, scalable and cost-effective online storage solution that leverages the power of the cloud. Customers with a Nasuni filer will now be able to use Rackspace Cloud Files for their primary storage needs. “We want to give our customers the widest selection of cloud storage providers and the ability to switch providers with ease and without incurring onerous fees. Our goal is to help establish a marketplace for storage as a service that encourages providers to provide the best levels of service at the best price for our customers,” said Andres Rodriguez, CEO of Nasuni.
