The University of Southampton recently launched the Iridis 3 supercomputer, one of the most powerful supercomputers in the UK. The system, which uses
IBM iDataPlex [1] rackmount servers and includes more than 8,000 cores, debuted at number 74 in the Nov. 2009
Top 500 list [2]. The iDataPlex features a half-depth form factor that reduces the airflow required across the components, lowering the power while providing twice the number of servers in the same space as a standard 42U rack. This video from a UK news report provides a closer look at this supercomputer. It runs about 3 minutes, 30 seconds.
