i/o Data Centers Goes On-Demand

Here’s something interesting: A new service offering virtualized, on-demand infrastructure and no “clouds” in sight. Data center specialist i/o Data Centerssaid today expanded beyond its traditional colocation and data center suites with a new service that allows users to lease “slices” of IT infrastructure.

The new i/o On-Demandservice is an expansion of an in-house program in which the Phoenix provider has hosted virtualized customer apps and storage on enterprise-grade hardware owned by i/o Data Centers. “For our colo customers, we are seeing a trend where they take a cabinet/cage/suite and then use the On-Demand service to virtualize their storage or processing for certain applications,” said Jason Ferrara, director of marketing for i/o Data Centers. “As our customers have become more comfortable with placing their mission critical applications and /systems in our care, they have also started to become more comfortable with virtualizing some applications and capacity. On-Demand allows them to do that.”

i/o Data Centers’ primary business is leasing space, in the form of data center suites – private data centers within a larger facility – and colocation space in which customers operate their own hardware. In the on-demand offering, i/o Data Centers owns the hardware and sells capacity. More than 30 customers are currently using the service. i/o On-Demand offers multiple configuration options from single servers to dedicated clusters.

“Companies want to manage performance, not hardware,” says Ferrara. “i/o On-Demand, helps our customers save time, resources and capital and eliminates the need to manage multiple hardware vendors and platforms.”

i/o Data Centers operates data centers in Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona.
