Roundup: NaviSite, EvoSwitch, Akamai, IBM

Here’s a roundup of some of some of this week’s headlines from the data center and hosting industry:

• New NaviSite data center in Charlotte.  On Thursday NaviSite announced the addition of a new data center facility located in Charlotte, North Carolina.  The new facility will allow NaviSite to meet the increasing hosting demands of new and existing customers in the southeastern region of the U.S.  NaviSite is partnering with DCI Technology Holdings, the owner of the Charlotte facility. NaviSite will release fourth quarter and fiscal year 2009 results on October 15, 2009.
• EvoSwitch signs EU code of conduct. Dutch carrier-neutral data center provider EvoSwitch announced it has signed the EU code of conduct on data centres energy efficiency.  The voluntary contract is made up of guidelines, recommendations and examples of best practice to save energy in data centers.  European data centers that sign this agreement will be obliged to reduce their energy consumption by 20% by the year 2020.  The Amsterdam based EvoSwitch consumes 40% less energy than traditional data centers today.  Managing Director of EvoSwitch Eric Boonstra said “The EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres Energy Efficiency is a good European initiative and will hopefully motivate more data centers in Europe to invest in reducing their energy consumption."

• AboveNet connects Iomart in London.  Above Net and iomart Hosting announced they have partnered to deliver mission-critical applications within the city of London.  AboveNet now provides direct, low-latency connectivity to and from iomart customers throughout London.  AboveNet has connected the iomart Tier 3 data center to its dedicated fiber network.
• Akamai's 2nd quarter State of the Internet. On Thursday Akamai released the 2nd quarter 2009 edition of its quarterly state of the Internet report.  The report gathers data across Akamai's global server network and shows statistics such as origin of attack traffic, network outages, adn broadband connectivity levels across the globe.  Highlights from the 2nd quarter include origination of attack traffic jumping to 201 unique countries from just 68 in the prior quarter.  Nearly 425 million unique IP addresses connected to the Akamai network. • IBM's data center remodel. GreenBiz.com interviews IBM VP of Global Technology Services Steven Sams to discuss how IBM used its own technology to work on overhauling their Lexington, Kentucky data center.  The webcast shows how IT can expand business operations while cutting costs companywide.  IBM implemented Project Big Green on the site and measured results.  Sames noted "We're seeing 15 percent to 70 percent reductions in overall operating costs in the client engagements we do day in and day out."  The Kentucky remodel project saved IBM 98 percent of costs and boosted capacity 8x.
