Berkeley Profs Look 'Above the Clouds'

The RAD Labs team at UC Berkeley discuss their new white paper on cloud computing, titled "Above the Clouds," which examined massive data centers as cloud platforms.

Last week a team of computer scientists from the Reliable Adaptive Distributed Systems Laboratory (RAD Lab) at UC Berkeley published a white paper titled "Above The Clouds: A Berkeley View of Cloud Computing." The RAD Lab’s research agenda is to "invent technology that leverages machine learning to help automate the operation of datacenters for scalable Internet services." Among the paper's key points is that economies of scale provide enormous data centers with cost advantages that enable them to run profitable large-scale online services. In this video, professors Armando Fox, Anthony Joseph, Randy Katz, and David Patterson of the Berkeley team discuss some of the ideas in the paper. This video runs 14 minutes.
