Cloud Alliance Between Sun, Amazon?

Sun Microsystems (JAVA) is set to announce a cloud computing alliance with Amazon (AMZN), with details expected Monday. That news comes from Om Malik at GigaOm, who interviewed Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz at Startup Camp in San Francisco. Here's the news from Om:

When I asked him about Sun — and cloud computing especially — in light of the recent trend in which startups now have more of an affinity with Amazon Web Services than Sun, Schwartz replied with a question: “Do you think it would make sense for us to partner with Amazon to offer free info on the cloud?” I guess, I said. "Then you’ll be paying attention to the announcement we make tomorrow with what we’ll be doing with Amazon."
Sun already has its own utility computing platform, Network.com, and is developing a new platform-as-a-service called Project Caroline to compete directly with Amazon.

In fact, Project Caroline now has a web site, which offers a description:

Project Caroline is a research program developing a horizontally scalable platform for the development and deployment of Internet services. The platform comprises a programmatically configurable pool of virtualized compute, storage, and networking resources. Project Caroline helps software providers develop services rapidly, update in-production services frequently, and automatically flex their use of platform resources to match changing runtime demands.
So given that Sun already has two utility platforms, what's up with the Amazon alliance? Stay tuned.
