Roundup: Rackable, Cummins, FastServers

Here's a roundup of some of this week's news from around the data center industry:

  • Cummins (CMI) said this week that commercial generator sales rose 23 percent, led by strong gains in Europe/U.K., India and the Middle East. The company cited "strength in all regions, particularly for generators above 1 Megawatt. Cummins said that "supply constraints involving the high horsepower engines and alternators remained a challenge for this business." In recent years the data center industry has experienced lengthy delivery backlogs for 2 megawatt generators.
  • The sale price in Layered Technologies acquisition of FastServers "is believed to be as high as $15 million," according to Midwest Business, which profiled the 27-year-old founders of FastServers, Ian Andrusyk and Travis Schaffner.
  • Rackable Systems (RACK) has filed a patent application for a container-based data center for technology connected with its ICE Cube portable data center. Google has been awarded a patent for a portable data center container, while APC has patents on cooling systems in portable data center.
