Rise of the Data Center Engineer
After years of toiling in "relative obscurity," data center engineers are now a hot property, as noted this morning by the New York Times, which features the Rise of the Humble Engineer on its business page this morning. Steve Lohr's story highlights two important trends: the growing importance of the data center in the Internet business, and the difficulty in finding skilled staff to master an increasingly complex set of requirements for data center jobs. An excerpt:
Today, data center experts are no longer taken for granted. The torrid growth in data centers to keep pace with the demands of Internet-era computing, their immense need for electricity and their inefficient use of that energy pose environmental, energy and economic challenges, experts say. That means people with the skills to design, build and run a data center that does not endanger the power grid are suddenly in demand. Their status is growing, as are their salaries — climbing more than 20 percent in the last two years into six figures for experienced engineers. The Times story features a number of prominent sources from the data center industry, including Chris Crosby of Digital Realty Trust, Stanford's Jonathan Koomey, Chandrakant Patel of HP, and Cisco's Paul Marcoux.
If you're hiring for your data center operations, you can list your company's job openings on the Data Center Jobs Board. We'll also mention new listings here on the blog, so it's a great way to get visibility for your job listings.
